Nicaragua to Open New Venezuelan Power Plants

Venezuela is assisting the newly-elected left-wing government in Nicaragua to solve the country's chronic power supply problems.

Managua, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina): The first power plants supplied by Venezuela to alleviate the energy crisis currently affecting Nicaragua will be operational within two weeks, President Daniel Ortega announced.

When making the announcement last night, during the awards ceremony of the best 2006 Nicaraguan athletes, Ortega stated those first generators will produce 15 megabytes.

Other plants will be inaugurated within four weeks, thus generating a total of 60 megabytes, a figure that will cover only half of the current deficit, Ortega noted.

"Unfortunately, we are facing a total collapse" in the energy sector, the president affirmed, warning that the power cuts affecting a large part of the country will continue "for a while."
