Republicans Don't Get It ... U.S.- Cuba Relations

We often talk about the freedom of the individual, but rarely talk about the freedom of the country. In a true democratic world order, the freedom of a country to self-express, to self-identify, to self-rule and co-exist is as natural as any of God’s variation. Freedom of country is paramount in a global environment where superpowers dominate world affairs.

What the extreme-right Republican does not understand about Cuba is the substance that fills the heart of a true Cuban. This substance is not necessarily communist, revolutionist, anti-imperialist, or any other adjective that an extreme-right Republican may use to characterize modern Cuba - No. This substance is what Cuba has had in its collective conscience throughout its history: independence.

The manifested struggle for independence is heroic in the face of forced conformity. Cuba is not Spain, Cuba is not United States. Cuba is proudly Cuba. Too many have sacrificed, too many have suffered, and it is now unthinkable to ever compromise the integrity of this dream. Gomez, Maceo, Cespedes, Marti, Castro - independence is not negotiable and not for sale. That’s the true Cuban heart.
